When Meat Loaf sang that he’d do anything for love, but he won’t do that, he probably wasn’t singing about dogs. But I see that line play out with loving owners all the time.
You love your dog and you want them to listen. And you’ve probably noticed there’s a limit to what love and treats can do.
Maybe it’s when your dog ignores you calling them in from the yard. Maybe it’s the squirrel they chase while you shout. Maybe it’s the barking that won’t stop no matter how much you beg, bribe, or plead. They’ll do anything for love, or for the treat in your hand, except the one thing you need most.
Why treats won’t cut it
Treat training sounds great: give a tasty reward and your dog happily listens. The catch is that treats only work when nothing better is competing for your dog’s attention. The moment a squirrel crosses the yard or a great smell drifts by, the treat loses.
Worse, treats don’t build leadership. Dogs look to their owners for guidance and security. When they see you trying to buy their obedience, they know who’s really in charge, and it isn’t you.
The leadership your dog needs
Dogs don’t need bribes. They need leaders: someone who guides them, sets boundaries, and communicates in a way they understand. When your dog respects you, they listen because they trust you, not because you’re holding a treat.
Becoming that leader isn’t something you pick up from a video or an article. It takes hands-on guidance for you and your dog’s situation. That’s what I do.
